The Field Test Challenge (May 20 – June 30)

Whether you are using it to dry off muddy recovery straps before packing them away, blasting sand out of your roof tent tracks, or just getting a stubborn fire going with wet wood — show us your setup. Let's see what you are doing out there.

Warning: Formatting will permanently erase all data on the SD card. If the card mounts but is throwing read errors, pull your required video files onto your local drive before proceeding.

The MacOS Disk Utility Process

1. Insert the SD card into your Mac using a reliable card reader. Press Cmd + Space, type Disk Utility, and open the application.

2. In the top left corner of the window, click the View dropdown and select Show All Devices. Select your physical SD card from the list of external drives.

3. Click the Erase button at the top of the window and configure the following parameters:

   • Name: Keep it simple, using only letters and numbers (no spaces).

   • Format: Choose MS-DOS (FAT) if the card is 32GB or smaller. If your card is 64GB or larger, you must select ExFAT to ensure compatibility.

   • Scheme: Select Master Boot Record.

4. Click Erase to execute the format.

Hardware Baselines

For stable, continuous loop recording without dropped frames or missing files, ensure your hardware matches these baseline specifications:

• Speed Rating: You must run a U3 / Class 10 rated card. Slower cards cannot handle the high-bitrate video streams, especially on multi-camera setups.

• Capacity Limits: Do not push past the maximum supported storage size for your specific unit, as the processor will struggle to index the files:

  • G900 PRO: 512GB maximum

  • G840S: 256GB maximum

Maintenance Routines

For those of you running your rigs in high-heat environments like the Southwest: how often are you manually formatting your SD cards to prevent corruption? Do you prefer formatting directly through the camera's internal menu, or do you pull the card to format it on your desktop? Drop your maintenance habits below.

One of the most common compromises when building out a rig for camping or extended trips is losing your rear visibility. Once you mount a roof tent, pack the cargo area to the ceiling, or add a swing-out tire carrier, your factory glass rearview mirror essentially becomes useless.

A community member recently shared this walk-around of their setup. By running a digital streaming rearview mirror and mounting the rear camera lens externally, the system completely bypasses the internal physical obstructions.

As seen in their garage footage, the digital feed provides a wide, unobstructed field of view that simply cannot be achieved with a traditional mirror once the vehicle is loaded with gear. It is a functional upgrade that directly impacts situational awareness on the highway and tight trails.

Share Your Mounting Solutions

For those of you running a streaming mirror system to solve visibility issues: where did you determine the optimal mounting point for your rear lens?

Did you mount it high near the third brake light to clear a spare tire, or down low by the license plate? Drop a reply with a photo of your rear camera placement and let the community know how it handles rain and trail dust in that specific location.

You make some of the best dash cams I have used. If you could make a front and rear motorcycle dashcam with a higher bit rate you would not only capture the market for people looking for reliable dashcams but also people looking to capture pov riding video. It doesn't even need a screen, just a weather resistant box we can install under the seat.

You already have crash and parking monitors in your dash cams, some of the best video I have come across, GPS, and the apps tracking info in your units that would be perfect for motorcycles.

Even better, add the ability to toss in a sim card and use variable bit rates in a low fps parking mode for remote viewing and tamper notifications.

Even if you don't nail everything, you're still going to have a product that would be better than anything I have been able to find.

We are looking for a few solid creators to run our established Power Running Boards and Tonneau Covers. Instead of just hunting around, we wanted to kick this search off right here in the community first because we know some of you are building some killer rigs.

• DIY Ready: You should be comfortable with a wrench. If you choose to have a shop install it, any labor costs are on you.
