First thing - this is NOT a how to use video! @WOLFBOX CAR LIFE has already done a "How To Use Vid Tutorial".
It's NOT an Installation vid. There are gobs of these online and different for different folks.
I mounted the main mirror on my dash (see the 3rd pic). I prefer this spot because it is easier for me to glance there than UP to the OEM location. It also lets me keep the OEM mirror so I can see who's doing what in the back seat.
Before I received the Wolfbox G900 Tripro from @WOLFBOX CAR LIFE to try and review, I had a total of 5 permanently mounted cams (as opposed to using the phone or other portable cams). Three are Garmin Minis - I had those before hearing about Wolfbox. Two are/were the 2 cams you get with the Wolfbox G900Pro.
This setup allowed me to document behind me, out the driver's window and out the windshield.
They have caught me:
- Being rear-ended
- Solo wheeling and self-spotting
- A near miss and a deer hit
- And lots of offroad fun
The 2 things I was still missing though were:
- The ability to see what was in front of me as I began climbing an obstacle
- And another interior cam which would document out the passenger side of the vehicle
The Wolfbox G900 Tripro fixed both of those issues for me!
I knew the new system was going to be better for my offroad events. I actually would be able to see in front of me as I went up an obstacle. Sorry about the improvised hill climb
I wanted to do this as soon as I could & the weather cooperated!
Below you will see the yellow DeWalt spotlight on the ground in front of the JP. In the 2nd pic, you can see there is NO WAY I would be able to see it as I was climbing that small hill. Imagine climbing an obstacle offroad and not knowing what was right in front of you! You sure can see it in the mirror though.
Here is the exterior cam. I have not decided where I am going to permanently mount it yet. I want to actually get off road and compare mounting spots B4 I place it permanently.
What I didn't realize until I opened the package was that Wolfbox included an additional interior camera which I could plug into the location on the Mirror where the front bumper cam normally inserts. This gives me the ability to utilize another camera in the JP to aim wherever I want!
I placed it on the passenger side dash so I could document that portion of the JP's view outside.
Something I would like to see changed though is the cord length on this cam. The doggone cord is sooo short. It makes it impossible for me to mount the cam anywhere but on the dash. I do understand why they did this. I know that MOST people will mount the additional camera in the cab so they can see themselves and interior activity:
- Family
- Goofy shenanigans
- Useful for an Uber driver to keep an eye on things
-etc.
Frankly I would rather see what is going on outside the vehicle than in.
Here is a vid from where it is currently mounted. I would rather NOT see the grab handle and the windshield frame. https://youtu.be/1buzMTVB4Mw
Let me mention a couple things I LOVE about the TriPro which seem obvious but make a huge difference to a guy like me and my JP usage.
1 - Mine is a daily driver as well as an offroad vehicle. Sadly, I do more daily driving than wheeling, so the addition of the extra interior camera is a game changer for me. I was contemplating buying an additional Garmin Mini after my last 2 "not my fault incidents" with the deer and the rear-ending. This has gone a long way to solving that issue.
2 - The ability to see the obstacles in front of the JP when I am off road - which can easily be concealed by the hood. This is not only a safety issue but a time saver from mandatory self-spotting.
3 - This may seem like a given, but the QUALITY of the whole system seems fantastic to me. Here is one example that I have not seen mentioned B4 (link me if it has) that I love. It saves me time doing it myself, the hassle feeding that tiny wire into that crinkly wire loom and frankly it is done better than I ever could. The pre-wire-loomed bumper camera wire was a wonderful surprise. I would have had to do it myself if Wolfbox hadn't already included it.
I did reposition the rear camera from where I had the 900Pro positioned. I recently picked up a cargo trailer. The original cam was positioned very low (see the circle beneath the plate) which worked fine at the time. I raised the new TriPro rear cam to the top of the center taillight so I could see again past the front of the trailer.
If someone was asking me the generic question "Why do you need a rear camera in a JP", the biggest advantage (other than those already listed) is expanded view as well as clarity of view. For those of us with plastic windows, you know how much they suck in the dark and when they are dirty. Here are a couple comparison pics to demonstrate:
This is at work. You can see how dark it is by looking out the front window. It is NOT pitch black. Now look through the rear plastic window via the mirror and through the rear camera. Night & Day so to speak. The rear cam captures so much light it is amazing.
This view is at home with the garage door closed:
And with the door open:
THX again to @WOLFBOX CAR LIFE for the upgraded TriPro! I can't wait to get out onto the trails again. Hopefully I don't need to document any more incidents & accidents but with the additional side viewing cam, I will be better covered.
And maybe no more self-spotting?!?
